Students participate in year level programs designed to prepare them for their subject selections and career decisions as they move through school to the work force and further study.
Oberon High school offers many vocational learning opportunities through its Vocational Education Training (VET) and School Based Apprenticeships and training (ASBAT).
Our Careers centre is open during school hours for students to access information and advice about Career Pathways.
Parents are welcome to make an appointment to consult with our qualified careers staff with any queries regarding their child’s pathway decisions.
Career education is imbedded into all aspects of our school curriculum in accordance with ‘Career Education Curriculum Framework’ policy.
In years 7 and 8 students complete Careers units in their Humanities classes where they experience a range of activities where they explore the world of work and their personal strengths and attributes to enable them to make successful career decisions in the future.
Year 9 students participate in the Morrisby online assessment which collects their aptitudes and interests, culminating in a 30 minute interview with a Careers Consultant to discuss their results and explore new pathway options. The Geelong Tertiary Futures Program, in conjunction with The Gordon and Skilling The Bay, is another program engages out students in two days of work skills focusing on workplace safety and resumes. Students also undertake a wide range of practical workshops at The Gordon campuses over three days.
Undertake an Occupational Health and Safety program and many undertake the industry ‘Construction Induction Card’, in readiness to participate in work experience.
Work experience is not compulsory but strongly advocated so students can experience the workforce firsthand. Many special programs with STEM, Health and Community Services and Professional and Government services are also available to year 10 students.
VCE and VCE - Vocational Major preparation events take place, including a visit to Deakin University, VCE subject expo, parent information night and compulsory student-parent subject selection interviews. We are very committed ensuring students and their families have ample time and opportunity to discuss their pathway options in relation to their VCE program.
Year 11 and 12 students receive career counselling interviews as well as opportunities to visit the Tertiary Expo and visits to The Gordon and Deakin uni. Students are assisted with their tertiary applications, resumes and job applications.
The Careers team is fortunate to have the Headstart coordinator based at Oberon High School. Headstart facilitates SBATs through careful work placement and continues to follow students through to the completion of their apprenticeship or traineeship after they have left school.
Each year our graduating students are followed up to check on destinations and for additional support.
